material design introduction

Have you heard about Material Design? If not then in today’s post, I am going to give you complete Material Design introduction. which can help you to get started with Material design.

Whenever the word ‘Material Design’ comes to the ears, your mind will get the thought that it might be something related to interior designing or something related to material of fabrics. Thanks to the Google that this myth is not going to last forever. Now this concept is not only limited to the physical world. Google’s material design is going to bridge the gap between physical and virtual world by creating more relevant UI process.

Material Design Introduction

Material design is design language specially created for Google’s newer versions of Android. This language emphasizes on mobile apps only but later the material design principles can be applied to web applications as well. So, let’s take a tour of this new concept and how will it affect the designing future.

Google Material Design

This designing language was developed by Google in 2014 especially for Android applications. There are many highly technical terms which should be known for better understanding but in short, we can say that the main aim of Google Material Design is to create a better foundation for UI.

We can simulate the Material designing with the physical interior designing, but the only difference is here the fabrics are not selected between cotton and satin. Here, the fabrics are made of the pixels. Various elements of the applications are created with the help of different material objects like rounded buttons, rectangle bars, etc.

Let’s shed more light on Material objects. In the digital world, every element of the design is separate objects arranged on different layers. Consider an application with the gray background and black navigation bar. Here the background is a full-length piece of material colored gray. The black navigation bar is nothing but the rectangular piece arranged on the top of the gray piece. A user can interact with the application by swiping, pinching or with a simple touch.

Thus, every piece interacts differently with the users, same as the real world. Thus, the material design is not only the collection of various objects and elements of an application. It’s a whole new designing language. Concluding all these things in words of Google itself,

Material Design: Goals and Principles

The goal of Google Material Design concept is to “Create a visual language that synthesizes classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.” In short, the goal is to create a design which will give the same experience across all the type and size of devices.

Material Design basically follows three fundamental principles,

1) Material is the Metaphor

A material metaphor is the theory of the system of motion and space. This principle is inspired by the concept of paper and ink. This is the technologically advanced concept which is open to any imagination or magic. The basics of light, surface, and movement are the key to convey how objects will move, interact and exist in the space.

2) Bold, Graphic, Intentional

These are also the key elements when it comes to printed designs. The purpose of typography, grids, space, scale, and color is not just to please the eyes of a user but also to create a hierarchy, meaning and focus. Intentional white space makes the interface look bold and provides waypoints for the users.

3) Motion provides meaning

The motion should be meaningful and efficient. It makes the user prime mover. All type of actions takes place in a single environment. Motion maintains continuity.

Material Design Colour Combination

Color combination plays a vital role when it comes to designing Android or web application. You can’t apply your favorite colors wherever you feel using them. The first step is to decide the color scheme or color palette.

In material design, color should be chosen keeping these guidelines in mind – muted environments, deep shadows, and bright highlights.

Color Tool is at your help. You can create the color palette and then apply it on your UI. Thus, you can have the idea about how a particular color scheme will look on your app. You can also mention the accessibility level of the chosen color.

Here are the material design guidelines to keep in mind while color palette selection.

The color palette contains primary and accent colors to develop your brand colors. Google material design suggests using 500 colors as the primary color and 300 colors as the secondary one. You can choose any bright color for the switches, sliders and other elements.

You can download similar color swatches for other colors from here. So, let your creative mind think of different schemes and try them on your UI with the help of color tool.
